Is a LinkedIn endorsement as valuable as a recommendation?

LinkedIn has recently introduced the endorsement feature making it very easy for your connections to endorse you for the skills you have in your profile, which raises the issue of having a great profile and making sure your skills are complete and prioritised but we’ll talk about that in another post.

Now I use LinkedIn to source leads for my businesses, but it is also one of my major sources of good suppliers for me. And I use it to find out more about he businesses I work with before a project starts.  So I’m a little sceptical about the benefit of these endorsements on your profile.

I am a huge fan of good recommendations. Not the ones that say “I met Philippa at a meeting and she was lovely” – which are great for the ego, but they don’t really help me when I want to find a new service provider, or to learn about the people I work with.

Can video actually make money?

I was recently asked what video could add to a marketing campaign. As anyone who knows me knows, I like to cut to the chase; and so I told them how I’d provided a recent client an increase of almost 3.5 times their pre-engagement monthly income.

So what I could’ve said, before jumping to the all-important ‘return on investment’ that I’ve generated for my clients, is that video can do the following (amongst other things):

  • Build awareness
  • Increase traffic to website
  • Increase engagement through social media
  • Improve Google rankings
  • Increase visibility
  • Provides PR opportunities
  • Provides positive image opportunities
  • Creates lasting impressions of you/your business
  • Provides another way of communicating with prospects, edging closer to the sale

With the help of a well-constructed and produced video, all of the above is possible.

Want to really make your linkedIn profile more interesting?

One of the biggest complaints on Linkedin has been the difficulty in adding media rich items to your profile. Before you had to embed a video into a slide share or google presentation but now there is a little icon you need to make your friend.

linkedin media add in icon

this little square with a plus beside it allows you to add a portfolio, presentation, photo or video as long as it has an http:// address attached to it.

New Year, New focus, or not…

As most people I am writing about the New Year.  As with New Year resolutions we should evaluate our business and see if there are things that we should be doing or need to change about how we do business or get business.  Re evaluate what you are doing, how much time things take and what they are doing for the business.

Advertising

Do you know how much business that ads and other types of advertising is bringing you? If you advertise in print as well as online media it is always good to find out which one is bringing you more business.  There are a lot of stats that I have heard over the years and most of us know that you can’t place one ad and expect that your door to be inundated with new customers. But on the other hand if you have been advertising for years and have only had one or two clients from it, does the cost outway the profit?

Social Media For Business – can you avoid it?

There are a lot of people talking about Social Media these days and let’s be honest, you’re reading this because you’ve probably heard of it and use some of it. But do you need to use it, or these days can you avoid it?

So which tools work best for which businesses?

My favourite and probably the one that is easiest to use effectively for any business, in my opinion, is Twitter . I think it has the most impact for ALL sizes and shapes of business. It can also provide feedback immediately, and not many marketing strategies can say that.

Small companies can run a GREAT marketing campaign at little or no cost to them (other than some time) so it’s great for start ups or those who are growing.

Everybody’s talking about it …

When it comes to our business isn’t that what we all want? Everyone talking about how good we are, what a great product we’ve got, how fantastic our services are?

Who wouldn’t want to be the subject of daily conversations the way an iPhone or TV programme (like The Apprentice) are? How many people have heard of YouTube videos ‘going viral’ and wish their business video was as popular?

We backed the bid, now we really need to back team GB, using social media of course!

I’ve spent my weekend glued to the TV, the pc and my phone – why? Well I’m a huge fan of the Olympics whatever country they’re held in. So to have them on the doorstep is a real thrill and I’m loving the fact we can access every minute of every event. (I’m also looking forward to seeing some things live next week but that’s another story…..).
