Getting More Customers, is that a problem?

This topic is perhaps the one that most people in Business have the most difficulty with.

Is it because they cannot get customers? No not always.

Is it because they think they know how its done but not really getting the results? Yes!

For anyone in Business to admit that they may not be on the road to success in this subject, is quite an issue. its one that especially men have a problem with, in terms of admitting they need assistance.

yet, if we let pride get in the way, then our Businesses are doomed to failure.

What does your email address say about you and you business?

I was contacted this week by a (self proclaimed) eminent authority on social media. He contacted me by email inviting me to attend one of his “world renowned” training courses. Nothing wrong so far, except it was sent with an email address along the lines of joebloggs@anispyouwouldhaveused10yearsago.com

The information about the course was all on an eventbrite page. Again nothing wrong with that, but I would expect a link to the home page of the training provider, which was conspicuously absent.

Can video actually make money?

I was recently asked what video could add to a marketing campaign. As anyone who knows me knows, I like to cut to the chase; and so I told them how I’d provided a recent client an increase of almost 3.5 times their pre-engagement monthly income.

So what I could’ve said, before jumping to the all-important ‘return on investment’ that I’ve generated for my clients, is that video can do the following (amongst other things):

  • Build awareness
  • Increase traffic to website
  • Increase engagement through social media
  • Improve Google rankings
  • Increase visibility
  • Provides PR opportunities
  • Provides positive image opportunities
  • Creates lasting impressions of you/your business
  • Provides another way of communicating with prospects, edging closer to the sale

With the help of a well-constructed and produced video, all of the above is possible.

A friend in need could be a friend indeed.

A friend of mine has written a book ‘How to do Everything and Be Happy’ and like every self respecting author he just had to have a book launch.

I wrote the date in my diary and offered to help any way I could. I thought I would be  on drink duty but Peter suddenly asked ‘Would you make some balloon hats on the day?’

Not what I expected.

Keeping your motivation up

Do you find that you lose momentum or have a lot of unfinished projects or business idea’s that you have not actioned?

How can you keep your motivation high?

It is different for each of us. I was sent a video by the guys at Market Samurai who put it best. Most of us cannot live for long on self control (the debate over having your favourite desert or abstaining) but if we have the right motivation we can do something indefinitely. Over a year ago a friend of mine and her husband decided to move abroad. they were planning to move in July of last year. She wanted to quit her job several months before so she could concentrate on packing, moving and finalising things.

What comes first – the Chicken or the Egg?

I thought I would start my first blog on this site, with a familiar age old question: What comes first – the Chicken or the Egg?

What a bizarre thing to write I hear you say, and what does this have to do with Business?

Well, recently I have been delivering some talks around Effective Marketing and why people don’t always see the results that they should from their Marketing efforts.

What has come from the feedback of participants is a lack of clarity as to what Marketing is and in particular its role alongside the sales function of a Business.

Does Sales come first and then Marketing, or is it Marketing first and then Sales follow up?

Want to really make your linkedIn profile more interesting?

One of the biggest complaints on Linkedin has been the difficulty in adding media rich items to your profile. Before you had to embed a video into a slide share or google presentation but now there is a little icon you need to make your friend.

this little square with a plus beside it allows you to add a portfolio, presentation, photo or video as long as it has an http:// address attached to it.

Time To Get Personal

I am not one of those bloggers who tend to rant and rave all the time. I don’t set out to offend anyone or be controversial.

However, enough is enough!

I am fed up of people using technology to create numbers not names and to completely ignore the personal touch – and I am sure I am not alone.

Celebrate your successes

So in my last blog I talked about having a plan to ensure that you can actually achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself or your business. And human nature being the way it is we are always the first ones to beat ourselves up about failing to achieve these goals. But how often do we celebrate when we do achieve them? It is very easy to forget the successes we do achieve as we go about our business lives so this year I’d like you to try something. Every day write in your diary, or in your calendar, or in a separate note book ANYTHING you have done well, anything you have achieved however big or however small. And if you can write more than one thing then write all of them down. But make sue you write something down. They don’t all have to be business related. Anything you do that make you feel good, that you have been putting off, or done for the first time, then record it.

New Year, New focus, or not…

As most people I am writing about the New Year.  As with New Year resolutions we should evaluate our business and see if there are things that we should be doing or need to change about how we do business or get business.  Re evaluate what you are doing, how much time things take and what they are doing for the business.

Advertising

Do you know how much business that ads and other types of advertising is bringing you? If you advertise in print as well as online media it is always good to find out which one is bringing you more business.  There are a lot of stats that I have heard over the years and most of us know that you can’t place one ad and expect that your door to be inundated with new customers. But on the other hand if you have been advertising for years and have only had one or two clients from it, does the cost outway the profit?

Do you want real results from your goals this year?

If you do then you probably need a plan

As business owners we are told we must have business goals and we have to achieve these goals, and that we have failed if we don’t achieve them.

But how realistic are our goals? For me the piece I most often find missing is the plan to achieve these goals.

It’s all very well setting yourself a goal, but is it actually achievable? And I’m not talking stretch goals here. I mean the goals where you say you can do something in 12 months, but based on your current performance it will actually take 16 months. Now you can cWordle: goal settinghange the goal to achieve this in 16 months, or you have to change what/ how you work. Again both valid options. But what isn’t valid is saying “I will achieve it in 12 months but I won’t change how I work/ what I do”. This means you have set yourself a goal that you can’t possibly achieve. And unfortunately we live in a culture where failure is criticised. This isn’t a failure of the goal. This is a failure of the planning process that should be part of the goal setting process.

Just start that business you have always wanted!

I have heard people who talk, sometimes for years about having their own business but they never do it.  One of my friends has talked about it since I met her over 4 years ago but she has not yet done much.  Do you talk or think about starting your own business but have not?

Why?

Do you feel you need to know more in order to start your business? There are a lot of people who do research and reading about having a business but never feel they know enough. There are different types of businesses, it depends on the type whether you need to know a lot or nothing when you start.

Real Magic of Hollywood

Last month I had the pleasure to be at The Coaches and Entrepreneurs Extravaganza for 4 days at The Magic Castle in Hollywood.

It was a great event with many speakers, experts and authors in the room and involved. 90 amazing people in one place – and I believe the relationships formed there will be a big foundation for my business and my life in the coming years.

So, you might be asking, why am I telling you this and how will this help you?

The Magic Castle - great networking inside!

Have you ever spent time with people who are negative and lacking drive and motivation? Spending time with those kind of people will tend to sap your energy and drain you.

However, spending time with people who are driven and motivated will help you to play a bigger game and give you more energy and motivation. I am sure you have noticed that too.

So as we look to build relationships that will help us in our business and our lives in general, it is important that we become conscious and strategic in the people we spend our time and energy with. Being at this extravaganza has helped me to realise what can happen when motivated, driven and positive people come together.

Here are just 3 of the things that I took from my time in Hollywood – and none of them involve movie stars – and I hope they help you too.

I need more customers

That is a comment I often receive when discussing sales development with potential clients.

Invariably I respond – no you don’t which gets some strange looks, if not comments!

I then add to that statement: You already have them!

That is the point, most businesses have a database, in one form or another of customers but they are not using it.

Sharia Finance

Islamic finance is a market worth over £ 1 trillion and UK banks are keen to break into this marketplace.

Sharia finance is derived from the religious text of the Koran. It follows three basic rules:

  • Devout Muslims must not be involved with markets that are considered sinful, such as gambling, alcohol, tobacco, arms, cinema, pornography or anything to do with pig meat.
  • They must avoid taking risks, such as investing in hedge funds and spread betting
  • It bans the payment of interest. In other words you are not allowed to create money by money. This rule makes it hard to use Western banking products such as loans, mortgages and savings accounts.
