So what did you achieve in your life, career, business last year?

Ruth Thirtle

It’s that time of year again where we look back over the last year and evaluate either how well we’ve done or how on earth did last year go by with only having achieved that much. Where are you sitting right now? How is 2011 looking for you?

Personally, I look at where I am with mixed emotions. I did have slightly bigger visions for last year with my business. On the other hand, the results that I have achieved with my clients have been amazing and I know that much is in place for a great year this year. As Anthony Robbins has said ” most people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in a decade!” I was looking at where I am now and feeling that I was not where I wanted it to be and my husband asked me to take a serious look at where I was last year and then tell him I had achieved nothing.

When I did this I realised that the small accomplishments really do add up. When my clients have results like this, we are both ecstatic with the results. I will tell you a few of the things that I have achieved; not to gloat, more so that you can evaluate objectively what you have achieved this year in a more positive way.

I have spent the last 7 months in the UK spending time with my family and building a truly international business, I have been involved in the UK with a fabulous networking group, 4Networking, and am set to launch with them in Australia next month, I have worked with clients to get over depression that was holding them back in business and seen other amazing results for clients. I have contributed to a Law of Attraction book and been interviewed on radio, I have been on 3 advanced presentation courses and am training people in presentation skills. I am using Social Media better and getting business through Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. These sort of things are small things we can overlook yet are each achievements in their own right. Are you too hard on yourself? Do you congratulate yourself and celebrate what you do achieve? Small successes definitely breed larger ones so celebrate all the way!

I would like to encourage you to evaluate what you have accomplished and also plan to celebrate what you will accomplish. Here are 2 things for you to do that will help you put things in perspective.

1) Write a list of 25 things that you accomplished in 2010, no matter how big or how small.

2) Write down 3 things that you wish to accomplish in the next 6 months and think about what you will do to celebrate when you have done so.

(This could be anything from a week’s holiday to a bubble bath with a glass of wine and a good book. Just commit to it and DO IT!)

  • Good post, Ruth, and delighted you put it on facebook or I might not have seen it.

I have just achieved my big goal for this year which is very exciting! Thanks also for the reminder about the Anthony Robbins quote (rather like taking 10 years to be an overnight sensation!) it has only come about because of the previous years. And as with all goals they can seem hard from a distance but once you have got there it was actually quite easy!
